Jon’s Audio Resume Vol. 8: Lifeguard

Welcome to Jon’s Audio Resume, the Jon of All Trades solo exploration of all the weird ass jobs I’ve had in my life. This series runs in chronological order and here is my eighth job.

Job: Lifeguard
Duration: Summer of 2004
Pay: $8/hr (I honestly can’t remember, but what I can remember is the pay was pretty crappy)
Did I get along with my boss? Yes. They were high school kids, and I was 22.

This job always seems like it’s going to be more fun than it inevitably is. Mostly it’s just boring. And it’s even more boring when you’re looking after a pair of little mountain community pools that are already lightly attended during a summer when it rains a lot.

This episode is still fun as I share stories of lifeguard training (with one notable anecdote about a former Bronco player’s kid who pussed out because of the swimming test requirement, which was hilarious), my angst about heading into graduate school, a game I invented to pass the time during these endless shifts where nothing happened, and more. All in all, it was a fine way to spend a summer, but really serves as a placeholder job while I was trapped between phases of my life.
