Schuyler Totman is a Master Coach at Boot Camp for New Dads. You’ll find him teaching Boot Camp for New Dads classes all over the Denver area five or more times per month. I met Schuyler as a “rookie dad” before my daughter was born, and I adored the class so much, I not only came back twice as a “veteran dad,” I sat down and interviewed Schuyler about the program and his history with it.

So, what is Boot Camp for New Dads? According to their website, “Boot Camp for New Dads is a unique father-to-father, community-based workshop that inspires and equips men of different economic levels, ages and cultures to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates and personally navigate their transformation into dads.” In short, it’s real men, real babies, real world advice.

On this week’s show, Schuyler shares a great deal about how his history as a father led him to become a coach (after he failed to attend before the birth of his children), the origins of the program itself and some of the most frequently asked questions by prospective dads (e.g. “How can I support my wife during breastfeeding?” “When can my wife and I have sex again?”). Perhaps most notably, Schuyler dispels some of the cultural myths about the role of the father in the first few months of a baby’s life.
