David Roth is an Editor at Defector.com, one of my absolute favorite websites (and, by their own tagline “The last good website), and he’s in that photo showing me a baseball card for Lastings Milledge, who is a definitely a guy some of us remember. David is a superlative writer and while the bulk of his recent work is about baseball and former President Trump, I’m pretty much in on anything David writes.
Since I put Lastings Milledge in the first sentence of this piece, it’s only fair that I warn you we remember A LOT of guys over the course of our 70 minute chat. Some are notable like Dwight Gooden or Mark Grace, and some are probably a bit more under-the-radar for many of you as we spend several minutes swapping stories about former Pirates and Rockies pitcher Josh Fogg, of all people. We also talk about the ethos of Defector, why the site is successful, what VC and PE goons don’t understand about the business model of creating something pay to read, and a lot more. It’s terrifically engaging stuff, but I’ll be honest, most of this is us bullshitting about baseball. And truthfully, if you’re here because you like the work of David Roth, you already know we’re going to be remembering guys and you’re already here for it.
