Peyton Garcia is the Newsletter Editor of City Cast Denver, one of my new favorite things in this city I love. What is City Cast Denver? I’ll let their own words explain it:
City Cast Denver is Denver’s first daily news podcast, celebrating and challenging the city’s news breakers and culture makers; activists and artists; neighbors and ne’er-do-wells. City Cast Denver is also a daily email that’s got the news you need, plus what to do tonight, where to eat this weekend, and all kinds of delightful ways to connect with the city. Both the podcast and email are free and fresh every weekday morning at 6 a.m.
On this week’s show, Peyton and I discuss our backgrounds in student media (we’re both CSU Rams), the benefits and challenges of hyperlocal journalism, journalists as “the enemy of the people,” how City Cast views competition with other news outlets, and a ton of other stuff I care deeply about. The media plays a vital role in understanding our world, so any time we can dig in and talk about everything from the hustle young journalists have to have to recent news about The Colorado Sun buying Colorado Community Media, it’s a conversation I’m always itching to have.
That stuff is all phenomenal. My favorite part of this episode though is hearing Peyton’s insane story about the beginning of the pandemic. I’m not going to step on it here, but it happens right near the end, and it’s well worth waiting around for. I am literally going to think about it every time I reflect on the early days of the pandemic.
Be sure to get onboard with City Cast Denver at their website. And be sure to check out more about Peyton on her personal page.
