Terrell Lamont is a multi-hyphenate artist. What does that mean? It means he’s a rapper-producer-filmmaker-cinematograhper-writer whose drive frequently gets him up at 4 o’clock in the morning to relentlessly pursue his creative passions. I was directed his way by Katie Jenkins at Tyler, The Creative Publicity because Terrell recently dropped two new singles, which you can find right here:
Those songs both rip, so be sure to give them a listen. On this week’s show Terrell and I discuss his songs, how his upbringing influenced both tracks, overt politicality in music vs lived experience, and a ton more. He’s got incredible insights about music as we touch on everyone from Michael McDonald to Rage Against the Machine to Childish Gambino. We also discuss his move away from hip hop into film and why. He’s as equally adept at discussing film as he is music, and we discuss Scorsese, Tarantino, Coppola, and how the work of Director forces you to play well with others.
Notably, we also discuss Terrell’s recent kidney transplant. Diagnosed with looming kidney failure at the age of 18, as of two months ago he’s the recipient of a brand new kidney. What’s it like living with that knowledge? How do you continue to chase your dreams when you’re hooked up to dialysis 11 hours a day? It’s a harrowing and fascinating story.
All in all, this episode is incredible. Be sure to check out all of Terrell’s music on Spotify and iTunes. Stay up with his film work through gritHouse. And check out Terrell on Instagram and Twitter.
