Dude, it’s Chris DeMakes! He’s the co-lead singer and guitarist for Less Than Jake! He’s host of the wildly entertaining podcast Chris DeMakes a Podcast. He’ll write you a custom song or do video consultations for you and your band at ChrisDeMakes.com. He’s got a new book called Blast From the Past. If you’re here, you likely know most of that, so let’s describe briefly what we talk about on the show.
We’re just about 25 years out from Less Than Jake’s major label debut record Losing Streak, so we spend some time talking about it, and where it sits for Chris as he reflects on his career. I had the pleasure of interviewing Less Than Jake’s former drummer Vinnie Fiorello in 2018, and on that episode we spent a great deal of time talking about In With the Out Crowd. I asked Chris about it, too, and his insights were fascinating. We talk about why all of these projects have come to the forefront now (hint: a pandemic will allow you the space to do some things you’ve never had time for), and his incredible work ethic. We discuss the book. Chris shares with me how he writes so many custom songs and how quickly he’s able to capture the essence of people’s incredibly personal feelings. In short, we cover a lot.
But more importantly than that, I want to convey what a warm and giving person Chris is. When he logged onto our Zoom call, the very first words out of his mouth were, “Well, aren’t you gorgeous?” He answered all of my questions with insight, thoughtfulness, good humor, and spirit. I’ve been a fan of Less Than Jake since I first heard Losing Streak, and I will continue to be a fan of anything they (and Chris specifically) do forever. What a privilege.
