Jose Prieto is the lead singer and guitarist of MakeWar, one of my new favorite bands. I became hip to MakeWar thanks to NERF, who curates KTCL’s HD Radio Station Punk Tacos. He loved their sound, and when I heard them the first time, I was immediately hooked.
After my interview with Jake Kiley from Strung Out, I told Vanessa, my contact at Fat Wreck Chords, that I’m always down to interview bands x, y, and z (names stricken just in case I end up interviewing them). One of them was MakeWar, and so she hit me up Saturday night and offered an interview the next day in the afternoon. I love getting emails like that.
So Jose and I connected via Zoom, and we chatted about what was supposed to be a kickass year for MakeWar touring all over the world in support of their excellent Get It Together record, how he’s spending his time during lockdown, what it’s like doing those streaming concerts, how their unbelievably cool Tarantino-inspired music video for “Oh, Brother” came to be (below), and a ton more.
It’s an awesome chat with a dude who makes art that brings me joy. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? I hope wherever you are, your work brings you joy. I hope my show is a bright light in a dark and challenging time. That’s what I aspire to do, and I appreciate you letting me be a part of your life.
Be sure to stay up to date with MakeWar on their website, on Facebook, on Twitter, on Instagram, on Spotify, and on SoundCloud. Also, whenever live music comes back, go the fuck out and support it!
