Welcome to Jon’s Audio Resume, the Jon of All Trades solo exploration of all the weird ass jobs I’ve had in my life. This series runs in chronological order and here is my fourth job.
Job: Ballfield Worker, City of Golden
Duration: May – August, 2000
Pay: $9.00/hour
Did I get along with my boss? Yes! Although in all fairness, he should’ve hated us way more than he did.
My all-time favorite job! I got to work in the sun with my friends, goof off in a truck all day and listen to the radio, got paid ridiculously well, and spent the evenings either getting drunk with those same friends or hanging out with my new girlfriend.
Sidenote: This was a great summer for so many reasons. I graduated high school, started smoking cloves with my friends (which was so much fun at the time), got laid for the first time (followed by many subsequent times after that), earned so much money, and then shoved off to college.
This job is ridiculously easy. You hop in your truck, you attach the thing that drags nails through the infield to aerate the dirt, you unhook that and put on the beam which smooths everything out, then you put on the drag which is the last step before you chalk the lines. You put the chalk on, you sweep the dugouts, and that’s it. We’d have to clean bathrooms sometimes, and do some related rote maintenance stuff, but most of the time we were screwing off.
Literally, we should have been fired every day we worked at that job. The fact that we weren’t was a miracle. I get into why in this week’s episode as well as provide some insight into the moments of our lives that deserve special attention. This job is a perfect example of one of those moments.
