I first met Justin Duran in like 2002 when he was fronting a band called Dysarranged. He was a guest on my college radio show in preparation for a big, all-day punk rock festival one of my colleagues was putting on. We hit it off immediately. When Dysarranged broke up, Justin (and his co-lead Brian, whom I was also friendly with) moved on to a band called A Void, whom I liked even more than Dysarranged. It was right about then that A Void hit the road, I finished college, and we lost touch.
We crossed paths again earlier this year right around the time I interviewed Matt Whitesides, and I was thrilled to reconnect with him. We picked up vibe-wise right where we left off and started exchanging stories from our time together, ones from the intervening years apart, busted each other’s balls, and basically had a great time talking about his career, the grind of the road, and where he hopes to go now. It’s some of the most fun I’ve had on this show in a hot minute. Plus, he shares a story of some of the ballsiest, DIY guerrilla marketing I’ve ever heard. It’s no wonder he now has a successful career in sales that supplements his music career.
